Use procurement to manage the value chain—not only collect questionnaires

Segment the supply base

Combine spend, category risk, geography, criticality, substitutability, emissions relevance and known incidents. High-risk does not always mean high-spend: a low-spend critical component or labour-intensive contractor can require stronger oversight.

Embed requirements

  1. Define minimum supplier standards and prohibited practices.
  2. Screen suppliers before onboarding and at renewal.
  3. Use proportionate evidence requests and contractual clauses.
  4. Provide remediation routes and capability building.
  5. Escalate severe or repeated failures with clear governance.
  6. Track outcomes, not only questionnaire completion.
